CHAPTER 3–SOCIAL MEDIA FOR BUSINESS
Warhol Design Project

Now that you’ve learned how to precisely add color to a black and white image, let’s apply that knowledge in a fun and personal setting. In this project, you are going to paint several renditions of a picture of yourself and arrange it in a grid. A famous artist that used this technique to develop pop art advertising is Andy Warhol. We are going to mimic this technique to create an original, personal piece of art.

First you will use the on-board camera of the Apple iMac to take your picture. Be creative with your pose so your project will be appealing and interesting! You will apply a filter inside Photoshop to make it look like a black and white sketch, then use your selection and coloring techniques to create the Warhol effect. Remember to use bright colors!

Reflections Design

Design with products, reflections of products and backgrounds.
Your job is to take a group of products and showcase them on a stage that reflects their image to make them seem more appealing and attractive.
Create a new Photoshop document that is 720 x 480 pixels. Create a stage and a background for your products. Place at least three different objects on the stage, the manufacturer logo on the wall, and create a reflection on the stage for each one. All of the products must be made by the same manufacturer. Make sure you orient the objects in the most appealing way and make them look good!

*Lightning Tutorial –

 lightning tutorial

Step 1: Create Lightning

a) Create a new document e.g. 600 x 600px (less intensity) or 1200 x 1200px (medium) or (for more intensity) 2400 x 2400px.

b) Create a new layer and name it Lightning

1

c)Open the Gradient editor (Type G and click on the gradient in the top left corner) and create a black and white gradient with a narrow gray area as shown below:

2

d) Paint the document with a linear gradient. The more narrow the grey area is the more clean the lightning will be so don’t make it too narrow.

3

e) Next make sure you have selected black as foreground and white as background

4.2

Then goto Filter > Render > Difference Clouds. Feel free to undo and redo to get the lightning effect you want:

4

f) Notice the main black line through the middle. This will be your lightning bolt. But to isolate it, you first invert (Image > Adjustments > Invert or Ctrl+I) it:

5

f) Add a new Adjustment layer with levels. You could also apply the levels directly but really in this tutorial you may need the flexibility later to fix the levels

g) You should adjust the levels to increase the intensity of the lightning.

6

Step 2 Add Color

a) Create a new layer and paint it with a blue gradient

7

b) Set the blending mode to overlay

8

9

c) Create another layer and call it Red Light. Then set the layer blending mode to soft light. Select a soft, big round brush and paint some lights with  a red, yellow and/or a violet color

10

11

d) If you want to intensify the lightning even further I recommend you add an adjustment layer for Curves and Hue/Saturation. Set the Curves first. Individual settings for your setup may be needed.

13

Than only adjust the Lightning a bit down in the Hue/Saturation layer

  • Storm Effects –

    storm

  • Transform this cloudy country side picture into a stormy and dramatic evening by adding simple lightning effects!

Start off by duplicating the default layer (CTRL+J) as Layer 1.

Reduce brightness of duplicate image by dragging center point of the Curves tool (CTRL+M).

Duplicate Layer 1 as Layer 1 copy. Go to Filter > Radial Blur > Zoom : 80. Set the blend mode for Layer 1 copy as ‘Multiply‘.

Now, create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N) and name it as “storm”. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds.

Next up, select Filter > Render > Difference Clouds. Apply the same filter (Ctrl+F) several times (preferably 5 times or above).

Bring out the Levels Window (Ctrl+L) and apply settings until you see lumps of clouds appearing (Input Levels: 30/0.75/175).

NOTE: Results/settings may vary as each clouds/difference clouds rendered may differ.

Once done, set storm’s blend mode to ‘Color Dodge‘.

Transform (CTRL+T) and scale the image. You can also adjust the perspective a little, based on the nature of your chosen image. Press Enter to apply the transformation.

Next, remove areas which are too bright. Follow these sub-steps:
    1) Go to Windows > Channel (to bring out the channels window).
    2) Hold CTRL and click on Red channel (to make a selection).
    3) Go to Select > Inverse (or press Shift+CTRL+I) to invert the selection.
    4) Go to Select > Feather (or press CTRL+ALT+D) and set radius : 10 pixels.

Click on the masking tool to hide the brighter parts of the layer.

Select layer mask of ‘storm’ layer and further adjust the levels (CTRL+L) until you have something like this (Input Levels: 0/1.70/180):

NOTE: Again, results/settings may vary as each clouds/difference clouds rendered from previous steps may differ.

Remove some bright areas of the storm by brushing over the layer mask with a soft black brush.

Now that we have got the storm going, lets add a few bolts of lightning.

First, create a new layer (Shift+CTRL+N) and name it as ‘lightning’. Using the Rectangular Marquee tool (M), select a square box (holding down the Shift key while dragging will create a perfect square). Bring out the Gradient tool (G) when you are done.

Create a gradient by dragging through the center of the selection.

The gradient should look like this, preferably.

With the selection still active, go to Filter > Render > Difference Clouds (or just press CTRL+F as it is your last applied filter).

NOTE: Difference Clouds rendered differs as it is randomly generated.

    Press CTRL+I to invert it.

    And adjust the level (CTRL+L).

Apply the lightning’s blend mode to ‘Screen’.

Next, use the eraser tool to remove any hard edges. Make sure the hardness is set to 0%.

Transform (CTRL+T) the bolt of lightning to which ever way you like.

It can be tweaked a little bit more; adding glows, reducing brightness, and etc. This is the final image.

  • When Cows fly…tutorial

  •  For today’s walkthrough, we’re going to show you how to make a cow fly in just a couple of quick and simple steps. Read on to find out…

First off, prepare these set of images:

Use this picture as the background,

     Replacement Photo for older background

    Let’s begin…

    Step 1

Separate the legs, the tails, and the head from the body.

    Step 2

Reposition them and and create bends at the legs. We can copy part of the leg out, and transform it. Slowly mask out the connecting areas to look seamless.

    Step 3

Enlarge the head a little, and liquify the body.

    Step 4

Further liquify the head. Pull out 2 stubs so that it can fit the horn.

    Step 5

Extract horn from source image and place the horns on the head. Fit it nicely in the stubs.

    Step 6

Since we will be shining lights from above, increasing shadows adds realism. Draw black shades on the body just under the legs.

    Step 7

Duplicate another layer. Set the top layer as ‘Multiply’ and the other as ‘Overlay’. Play around with the opacity for both to achieve a desirable shadow tone.

    Step 8

Draw more shades of black on the cow.

    Step 9

Similar to the steps above, duplicate another layer and change their blend mode respectively.

    Step 10

The hind right leg looks a little too bright, so we will add more shade to it.

    Step 11

Further add shadow and highlights, by creating a new ‘Overlay’ layer (Filled with Overlay neutral color). Use white brush to add highlights and black brush to add shadows.

We will have something like this:

    Step 12

The black edge on the tip of the right ear just won’t do, so we will further add white lines there, resembling highlights.

    Step 13

Extract wings from the dove. We’ll only be using one side of the wing, duplicate and flip so that it resembles a pair.

    Step 14

Copy part of the right wing to fill up the gap.

    Step 15

Combine the cow and the pair of wings. The wings should be place underneath the cow layer.

    Step 16

Use the healing brush to join the connecting area.

    Step 17

Import background into your canvas, and place the winged cow accordingly.

    Step 18

Change the contrast and color of the background according to these settings.

    Step 19

Create an elliptical shape using the selection tool, feather it and fill it with black.

    Step 20

Again, duplicate this layer, one with ‘Overlay’ blend mode and ‘Multiply’ for the other.

    Step 21

Duplicate these 2 layers, and transform it into a bigger shape.

    Step 22

Draw a ring on top of the cow’s head and apply these settings.

    Step 23

Flatten the ‘halo’ layer (Create an empty layer and merge it with the layer with blending option). Set it as ‘Screen’ blend mode. Duplicate this layer to strenghten the opacity and glow of this halo.

    Step 24

We shall progress to creating a light ray effect. Add a curves adjustment layer and mask off accordingly. Drag the curves to darken the surrounding.

    Step 25

Duplicate this adjustment layer and invert its layer mask. Drag the curves upwards.

    Step 26

Create a new layer, fill it with black, and render lens flare. Apply a little Gaussian blur to it.

    Step 27

Set blend mode for lens flare layer as ‘Screen’.

    Step 28

We can further add intensity to the source of light ray, by drawing streaks of lights using white brush, setting it at ‘Overlay’ blend mode.

    Step 29

Next up, we will add in some feathers. Open the feather image and desaturate it.

    Step 30

Do a quick mask by dragging the blend if sliders, and flatten the layer.

    Step 31

Resize and make a selection around the feather, and define it as a brush.

    Step 32

We can use different brush setting to create a natural flow of feathers, or we can place them manually.

    Step 33

Add in more feathers and combine them into one layer.

    Step 34

Apply an outer glow to add some color to the feathers.

    Step 35

Duplicate another layer and invert this layer of feathers.

    Step 36

Place the inverted layer above and set blend mode as ‘Overlay’.

    Step 37

Create a new alpha channel (Alpha 1) similar to below.

    Step 38

Apply lens blur to both of the feather layers, based on this channel.

    Step 39

Add in more feathers with different opacity and blurness to add a sense of depth.

    Step 40

    Import the road sign.

    Step 41

Extend the pole of the sign, simply by copying and extending it from existing parts.

    Step 42

Transform it from its original perspective to a flatter one.

    Step 43

Reduce the size of the cow symbol,

    Step 44

so that we have space for a halo sign.

    Step 45

Transform and tilt the sign abit.

    Step 46

Increased its contrast and saturation by a little:

    Step 47

We can then combine the background and sign layer, and apply lens blur using the same channel ‘Alpha 1’.

    Result:

    Final

    Final Piece

In the final piece, further add some glows, and sharpen the whole image a little.

    Desaturate colors

The Desaturate command converts a color image to grayscale values, but leaves the image in the same color mode. For example, it assigns equal red, green, and blue values to each pixel in an RGB image. The lightness value of each pixel does not change.

This command has the same effect as setting Saturation to ‑100 in the Hue/Saturation adjustment.

Note: If you are working with a multilayer image, Desaturate converts the selected layer only.

Choose Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.

    To the top

    Invert colors

The Invert adjustment inverts the colors in an image. You can use Invert as part of the process of making an edge mask to apply sharpening and other adjustments to selected areas of an image.

Note: Because color print film contains an orange mask in its base, the Invert adjustment cannot make accurate positive images from scanned color negatives. Be sure to use the proper settings for color negatives when scanning film.

When you invert an image, the brightness value of each pixel in the channels is converted to the inverse value on the 256‑step color-values scale. For example, a pixel in a positive image with a value of 255 is changed to 0, and a pixel with a value of 5 is changed to 250.

    Do one of the following:

    • Click the Invert icon  in the Adjustments panel.
    • Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Invert. Click OK in the New Layer dialog box. Note: You can also choose Image > Adjustments > Invert. But keep in mind that this method makes direct adjustments to the image layer and discards image information.

    To the top

Create a two-valued black and white image

The Threshold adjustment converts grayscale or color images to high-contrast, black-and-white images. You can specify a certain level as a threshold. All pixels lighter than the threshold are converted to white; all pixels darker are converted to black.

    1. Do one of the following:
      • Click the Threshold icon  in the Adjustments panel.
      • Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Threshold. Click OK in the New Layer dialog box.
    2. The Adjustments panel displays a histogram of the luminance levels of the pixels in the current selection.
Note: You can also choose Image > Adjustments > Threshold. But keep in mind that this method makes direct adjustments to the image layer and discards image information.
    3. In the Adjustments panel, drag the slider below the histogram until the threshold level you want appears. As you drag, the image changes to reflect the new threshold setting.

    To the top

    Posterize an image

The Posterize adjustment lets you specify the number of tonal levels (or brightness values) for each channel in an image and then maps pixels to the closest matching level. For example, choosing two tonal levels in an RGB image gives six colors: two for red, two for green, and two for blue.

This adjustment is useful for creating special effects, such as large, flat areas in a photograph. Its effects are most evident when you reduce the number of gray levels in a grayscale image, but it also produces interesting effects in color images.

If you want a specific number of colors in your image, convert the image to grayscale and specify the number of levels you want. Then convert the image back to the previous color mode, and replace the various gray tones with the colors you want.

    1. Do one of the following:
      • Click the Posterize icon  in the Adjustments panel.
      • Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Posterize.
    2. Note: You can also choose Image > Adjustments > Posterize. But keep in mind that this method makes direct adjustments to the image layer and discards image information.
    3. In the Adjustments panel, enter the number of tonal levels you want.

    To the top

Apply a gradient map to an image

The Gradient Map adjustment maps the equivalent grayscale range of an image to the colors of a specified gradient fill. If you specify a two‑color gradient fill, for example, shadows in the image are mapped to one of the endpoint colors of the gradient fill, highlights are mapped to the other endpoint color, and midtones are mapped to the gradations in between.

    1. Do one of the following:
      • Click the Gradient Map icon  in the Adjustments panel.
      • Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map. Click OK in the New Layer dialog box.
    2. Note: You can also choose Image > Adjustments > Gradient Map. But keep in mind that this method applies the adjustment directly to the image layer and discards image information.
    3. In the Adjustments panel, specify the gradient fill you want to use:
      • To choose from a list of gradient fills, click the triangle to the right of the gradient fill. Click to select the desired gradient fill, and then click in a blank area of the Adjustments panel to dismiss the list. For information on customizing the gradient fill list, see Work with the Preset Manager.
      • To edit the gradient fill currently displayed in the Adjustment panel, click the gradient fill. Then modify the existing gradient fill or create a gradient fill using the Gradient Editor. (See Create a smooth gradient.)
    4. By default, the shadows, midtones, and highlights of the image are mapped respectively to the starting (left) color, midpoint, and ending (right) color of the gradient fill.
    5. Select either, none, or both of the Gradient options: Dither Adds random noise to smooth the appearance of the gradient fill and reduces banding effects.
Reverse Switches the direction of the gradient fill, reversing the gradient map

8/20/16—FBLA Competitive Event Topics Clarification: There appears to be some confusion about what “new, member” means in the 2017 NLC topics for Digital Video Production, Publication Design, and Social Media Campaign. A “member” original TV series or movie refers to something like Fuller House on Netflix or a movie that HBO produces and airs. Those networks are called member networks because you have to subscribe to them. “New” refers to the fact that it needs to be a new TV series or movie, where the FBLA students come up with the concept, title, logo, etc.
