GOAL: Before you leave today you will learn about finding a job. You will be creating your resume & letter of application and you will have the chance to correctly complete a job application form and a W-4 form.

  8. DO THIS & TURN IT IN–VIRTUAL BUSINESS PERSONAL FINANCE GAME:
    1. Get into the Virtual Business Personal Finance game on your desktop
    2. Click on LESSONS & Open the Lesson 2 Finding A Job handout OR use the printed copy
    3. Read YOUR GOAL, YOUR SITUATION, and GOOD NEWS at the top
    4. PART A:
      1. #1–be sure you review these parts of the tutorial so you know what to do
      2. #2–Do it as instructed to start the sim
      3. #3–Do it as instructed. There really are 8. Be diligent!
      4. #4–Do it as instructed. Answer the question either on the printed handout or in your Word Online file for this class.
      5. #5–Do it as instructed
      6. #6–Do it as instructed. Worksheet 2 is on the next page.
        1. Gross pay is what you make BEFORE taxes and other deductions are taken out of your paycheck
        2. Net pay is your TAKE HOME PAY. It is the amount of your paycheck.
        3. To find “Deductions as a % of gross:
          1. GROSS PAY – NET PAY = TAXES/DEDUCTIONS
          2. TAXES/DEDUCTIONS / GROSS PAY * 100 = DEDUCTIONS AS A % OF GROSS

  9. In a Word Online file shared with me, let me know how far you got today and what questions you have.
  10. EXTRA CREDIT–LINKEDIN ASSIGNMENT: The purpose of this assignment is to launch your participation in LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) which is an online tool to help you develop professional connections. The information you enter should be both professional and thorough, it should make a good impression to future employers. To complete this assignment, complete the following steps:
    1. Set up an account on www.linkedin.com
      1. You can (but do no have to) use your school email account.
      2. If you use another account, be sure that the email is professional. (hot_bod_123@gmail.com would NOT be professional)
    2. Add your:
      1. Education
      2. Skills (computer skills, leadership, etc.) at least 5
      3. Work experience with descriptions (no formal work experience? Volunteer experience counts too!)
      4. Professional/appropriate photo
      5. Activities/honors/projects/classes that are relevant to your career plans
    3. Join at least 2 groups that interest you.
    4. Establish at least 25 people as 1st degree contacts through the system.
    5. Using the “print screen” key, or copy/paste into Word, print out your LinkedIn Profile page and turn in that document
  11. MORE EXTRA CREDIT:
      1. Make a business card with your personal info
        1. Get into Publisher
        2. At the top of the first Publisher screen click BUSINESS
        3. Click BUSINESS CARDS on the far left
        4. Click CREATE
        5. Click PAGE DESIGN and choose a color scheme of your choice
        6. Click the LOGO and delete it–replace it with a logo of your choice or put a shape in as a design
          1. Click the INSERT tab
          2. Click Picture to insert a picture from your files OR click Online Pictures to select a piece of clipart OR click a shape and draw it & fill it/format it
        7. Replace all the info for the first card with all your info. See my example below.
        8. Copy and paste the info from your first card to the other 9 cards on the front.
        9. Click on page 2
        10. Replace all the info with your own info. See me example below.
        11. Copy & paste all the info from the first card on page 2 to the other 9 cards on page 2
        12. Print to the Laserjet M553 printer–print on both sides–flip on the long edge
        13. Use my paper cutter to cut your cards–see me examples sitting on the table in the classroom
